Online Legal Issues: Facebook, MySpace, Twitter, YouTube and Blogging

Friday, March 20th, 2009

Wednesday, April 1st, 2009, 12:00 noon - 2:00 pm

Facebook, MySpace, Twitter, YouTube and blogging are increasingly becoming primary means of communication among individuals and businesses. The ability to share and exchange information with such ease is truly changing the way we work and play, but, at the same time, we need to stay aware of the legal foundations on which we build our work and play. It is, for instance, important to understand that because something appears on the Internet does not mean it is in the “public domain,” available for anyone to use.

Important copyright issues are involved when we post a video or music clip at an online personal space, when we post photographs of people, whether famous or unknown, and when we offer links to other sites or to our own. Bloggers have the same copyright to their online material as authors do to their books.

Please join Jefferson Coulter, founder and owner of Coulter TM, as he talks about the new forms of common legal issues encountered in the use of online social networking/media sites and other forms of digital communication. Bring your questions!

Jefferson Coulter represents clients in state and federal court in disputes involving claims of intellectual property infringement, unfair competition, and commercial misconduct. He also represents trademark owners in proceedings before the U.S. Trademark Trial and Appeal Board. Outside of the office, he frequently speaks to entrepreneurial and artist groups on topics such as best practices to protect content, brands and trade secrets; strategies for minimizing business risks; and techniques for expanding product offerings through licensing, franchising and sales. He has taught business and intellectual property law to video game designers at DigiPen Institute of Technology and he currently publishes “Copyright or Wrong,” a blog that reports on developments in copyright law and content policy.
